Meningitis Shots

UPDATE:

Meningitis shots that were scheduled for February 24th had to be rescheduled due to a family emergency.  The new date is Monday, March 29, for meningitis and tetanus booster shots.

The Dade County Health Department (DCHD) is offering Meningitis shots to all 7th through 12th grade students.  Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord.  The inflammation is usually caused by bacteria or viruses.  Bacterial meningitis is less common than viral meningitis but is usually much more serious and can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.

Meningitis can be prevented by routine immunization of young adolescents.  The CDC now recommends this vaccine for children who are 11 years old, or high school age, or entering college and will be living in a dormitory setting.  In fact, most colleges now require it for admission.

The DCHD will be giving the shots at school to students with completed paperwork (signed permission from parent) on Monday, February 24, 2010.  Although , there is no charge for this shot, there is a recommended donation of $3.00, to help cover the expense of supplies.  However, no one will be refused for being unable to donate.  If you have any questions about this vaccination or other shots, don't hesitate to contact Karen Hayes at 417-232-4513 or the DCHD at 417-637-2345.
